![]() ![]() Many philosophers, however, have thought that happiness is different from pleasure, and there has been disagreement and confusion about what "happy" and "pleasant" mean. Other philosophers have thought that happiness is the only thing that is intrinsically desirable and if saying that a man is happy at a given time is the same as saying that he is experiencing pleasure at the time, then their names could be added to this roster. This thesis has been defended by a distinguished line of philosophers from the early Greeks to the present, including Aristippus, Epicurus, John Locke, Thomas Hobbes, David Hume, Jeremy Bentham, J. More fully stated, it is the thesis that only pleasant states of mind are desirable in themselves that only unpleasant states of mind are undesirable in themselves and that one state of affairs is more desirable in itself than another state of affairs if and only if it contains more (in some sense) pleasant states of mind than the other (the quantity of value in a state of affairs being measured by the quantity of pleasure in it). The first view, called "ethical hedonism," affirms that only pleasure is intrinsically desirable and that only displeasure (or pain) is intrinsically undesirable. In our chocolate shop, hedonists are standing on both sides of the counter.Hedonism (Greek, ἡ δ ο ν ή, "pleasure") is a term that refers to either of two distinct but related views, one a thesis in normative ethics, the other a generalization about human psychology. Chocolate, as simple as it may seem to some, can lead us to achieve that. However, by being a branch of something as universal as the pursuit of happiness, the argument can be made that hedonism is at the heart of humanity. There are some who interpret hedonistic ideology as being overtly self-serving, and occasionally, due to religious affiliation, it is even seen as sinful. Today, the term hedonism is subject to polarizing perceptions. This notion resonated with many, and the idea grew and evolved over time. Aristippus believed that the highest attainable good in life is pleasure. The philosophy of hedonism dates back to Ancient Greece and is said to be started by Aristippus of Cyrene, who was a student of Socrates. Hedonists want their senses satisfied and pleasure maximized. ![]() Their attraction to artisan chocolate that led them through our door is part of a grander pursuit of pleasure. What these curious customers don’t realize when they ask, “What is a hedonist?” is that they themselves are hedonists, indulging in chocolate at the very moment of their inquiry. Before long, they decide it’s time to taste. They touch bags of chocolate bark and boxes of salted chocolate-covered caramels, hearing the satisfying sound of chocolate shifting around, as if anxious to be eaten. Soon, they are allured by the aroma sneaking out of our kitchen, as their eyes become transfixed on the chocolate truffle display. ![]() ![]() A first-time customer will enter, intrigued by the promise of artisan chocolate. Generate and Maintain Interest Use Attention-Getting Elementsīefore you capture the interest of an audience, you have to get their attention. These three goals include 1) arousing the interest of your audience, 2) presenting information in a way that can be understood, and 3) helping the audience remember what you have said (Fujishin, 2000).
